As a little boy it became obvious that I had some sort of artistic compulsion. I was drawing on every blank page in the house: the white pages in the be-ginning and ending of every book in the house as well as every scrap of blank cardboard; with pencil, chalk, or crayon. All the men in our family saved the white cardboard stiffeners that came with new shirts (friends and relatives too!).I went from birds to animals to fish to flowers to cars and gradually to PEOPLE, but I skipped “stick figures”. My progression in school became more recognizable and my self-confidence grew.
Somewhere along here , I KNEW THAT I WAS GOING TO BE AN ARTIST ! ! ! ! At this point, art teachers recognized some gift and began to nurture it: Awards accumulated:
“Gold Key” pen & ink dwgs, Sat. A.M. School of Art , Shaw H. S. Mr. Bruce Holderbraun, teacher. Illustration Major: 4 yr. Diploma. (explain: to obtain a teacher’s degree required a student to complete additional academic college courses which I felt I didn’t need, as I intended to seek employment at one of our local Art/Illustration Studios: meanwhile the business of commercial Art changed drastically, to a situation where the Studio Art Directors determined which Illustrator ‘s skills fit each niche (to make the most money for his studio,) and there he was to labor henceforward. I didn’t want that.
Korea was HOT. So as soon as I graduated from The Cleveland Institute of Art, I enlisted in the USAF and was shipped to Germany. I was doing all types of Art ,Graphics, and illustration, Much of it classified. While stationed in Germany I took leave to Amsterdam, Holland, Where I met and Married My Beloved Wife Christina; 6-16-56.
I rotated back to Ohio where I reenlisted for The USAF Orientation Group where I ran the Art Shop. We produced all types of display graphics and often accompanied USAF exhibits on tour Worldwide. I left the Air Force For Civil Service, and was selected by the U.S. Air Force Museum as Chief Exhibits Division in June, 1966 from where I retired in 1986.
